Traveling Overseas

Traveling overseas is different from traveling locally or nationally. When you are traveling overseas, you must have a passport. In some cases you will also need a visa. These things have to be taken care of months in advance of your trip. You also will possibly need a driver's license depending on the country of your destination.

No matter which country is going to be your destination, it is your duty to find out beforehand what are the prerequisites to go to that country. You can check with the local embassy for more information or you can go on the Internet to research information for yourself.

Depending on the time of year you want to travel, find out what type of clothing you should take with you and what will happen as soon as you get to the airport such as any bus transportation for hotel customers. Most hotels do provide transportation for those who have already booked their room at the hotel.

Be sure to research any vaccinations that you may need such as for malaria or any other disease that the country may have a mandatory policy for. Learn about the culture of the country - what you shouldn't say or do. Some countries have fiestas where the city literally shuts down at a particular time of day and there is not much activity. You need to be aware of this so you can plan your trip to be an enjoyable one.

Of course, you won't be able to learn the language so fast, but you can try to learn some of the words so that you can detect anything that is being said. Get a handbook at the travel agency or brochure so that you can study the types of entertainment and attractions that are open to you while you are there.

If you are going to get a rental car, make sure you ask for a map of the area so that you don't get lost. Schedule your route beforehand. Do not go into unfamiliar territory. If you get lost, make sure to stop at a gas station or large store for directions. Don't stop in an alley or a lonely area that does not look safe.

I would recommend booking an all-inclusive vacation package so that the hotel plans your schedules and provides transportation to take you to different attractions during the day. If you have been to the country before and are already familiar with certain areas, then renting a car and going out on your own is feasible.

If you travel in groups or with a large family, then you have an advantage for reduced cost with your airfare, hotel, rental car and food. You can all pool together and share the costs. When you travel in a group, it is also safer to go out at night. You don't want to go out at night alone because if you don't know the area, you can run into danger. Traveling overseas can be fun, if you do your research and learn about the country before you go there.
