Camping Offers Many Choices to Enjoy the Great Outdoors

You have probably read a number of articles written by me about camping. If so then you already know that I am an avid camper and think camping is one of the best weekend vacation getaways you can take with your family. You probably already know that camping is also one of the most affordable trips you can take as well.

So what does all this mean? It simply means you should be doing more camping. However there are varying degrees of difficulties when it comes to camping. You can take the leisurely weekend getaway at a local state park with water and electric hookups, to hiking in to your campsite along the Appalachian Trail where everything you have is all on your back, more on that in a moment.

If you are looking for something in between, maybe you do not want the luxuries of home so that you are given the sense that you are in the great outdoors, yet do not want the feeling that you will be living off of tree bark for three days, do not worry, those options exist as well.

I recently camped with my brother, father and a family friend at Pennsylvania's Promised Land State Park. I would categorize this campground into the latter part of what I just wrote. We did not have water and electric hookups so we were left to cook off propane, gas or an open fire (whichever you choose), yet it had bathroom and shower facilities within reasonable distance so not to seem like we were in the middle of nowhere.

Pennsylvania's Rickett's Glenn State Park is the same as Promised Land as noted above. Also I want to mention that both campgrounds have beautiful lakes with acres of water to take a small boat out and go for some pan fish, maybe a pike or a bass or two. If fishing is not your "thing" then the miles of hiking trails they both offer will keep you busy during the day so as not to leave you sitting around the campsite doing nothing.

I mentioned before about hiking into the Appalachian Trail, and although I won't go into detail about my trip (I will save that for a future article), if you are looking for this type of hiking/camping trip, then the Appalachian Trail is a good bet. The trail my friend and I chose was challenging to make it fun, yet not over challenging to make it feel like work. The Appalachian Trail stretches from Maine to Georgia so you can see you have plenty to choose from. Along the way you will encounter much wildlife and various bodies of water. I have heard stories of people hiking the entire trail, although I have never met one personally myself, nor have I ever even come close to hiking the entire trail.

As you can see you have many choices when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors. First figure out what you want to, find out where you can do it and then as Nike says, just do it!

How to Make a Very Cheap Water Steriliser

What would you do if you were travelling in a foreign country and you needed water but were not able to buy clean water and you did not have any water purification tablets with you? Or maybe the public water supply has been damaged due to a severe storm, earthquake or other event so you are not sure whether the water really is fit to drink. How could you make it drinkable without having to spend a fortune?

Making A Water Steriliser

Firstly, let's hope you are never in this situation but if you are and if you have access to a clear plastic water bottle, you can make a fairly effective water steriliser. Here's how. Fill the bottle with the cleanest water you can find. If the water is murky, you may have to filter it through some clean cloth to remove the sediment and some suspended solids. Even better would be to pass it through a coffee filter paper optionally filled with clean sand.

Once the bottle has been filled, screw the cap on. Now place it where it will receive full sun for around 6 hours. Put it on a dark background, if possible.

Does it really sterilise the water?

Yes - to a degree. With sufficient good sunlight it will kill pathogens such as bacteria and cysts which can cause disease; however, it will not remove toxic chemicals if these are present in the water. Mind you, if it comes to a choice of dying from thirst or drinking chemically contaminated water you would drink the water and worry about the chemicals later.

How Does It Work?

There are two mechanisms at work here. The first is the UV which acts to kill bacteria. While there has been some discussion in various forums as to whether sufficient amounts of the right sort of UV actually penetrate the plastic, it is probably safe to say that some UV will definitely enter the water. It's effectiveness will be reduced if the water is turbid or murky - hence the requirement to run it through some sort of filter.

The second mechanism does not rely on UV but heat. Leaving a bottle in the sun will raise the water temperature to over 65°C. Maintaining this temperature for at least 1 hour will kill bacteria and cysts.

In summary, in an emergency situation, a plastic water bottle and sunlight will provide a temporary method for sterilising water or at least making it drinkable. Obviously it is better to have a proper water purifier for this situation. There are portable water purifiers which are light enough to be taken on trips. Some will purify the water without requiring chemicals or electricity, while others require water purification tablets to ensure water safety.

The best camping gear for your trip largely depends on what kind of camping vacation you've planned. You could be car camping, RV camping, back country camping or even canoe camping and each trip has special considerations.

The easiest trip to plan for of course is a trip in your trailer or RV. A vacation of this type is fun because it it gives you all the luxury of home in a sort of "condensed" space. Kids love to be in trailers and RV's so this type of camping vacation is really perfect for you and your family to get away from home for a few days. Many are equipped with running water and all the basic necessities of home so in that sense this is really the easiest type of camping vacation to go on. I suppose though you do need to know in advance which campsites support RV camping.

Of course some folks don't believe that camping involves sleeping in a bed and having your home kitchen at your disposal and would rather "rough it" a little bit. My thoughts exactly... But the thing is you need to pack a little lighter in order to get everything you need. You can buy specialty camping cookware and sleeping pads, camp stoves, and sleeping bags that are all of an ultralight nature and they are therefore easier to pack and carry. You don't need to pack like this so much if you're using your car as a homebase or even a site that you can drive up to directly but if you decide that camping and hiking will be the vacation for you then you definitely should consider using some of this gear. It really does make life easier when you're on the trail.

Of course there are the folks that prefer canoe camping or kayak camping. Well this is a lot of fun, and very relaxing in it's own way but if you plan on having to do any portaging on your trip then it may be done more easily if you brought along a set of wheels so you don't have to unpack your boat every time you come to the next shoreline. As well you would be extremely wise to use drybags for your gear that you can clip right to your boat. This will not only do an excellent job of keeping your stuff dry but will keep you from losing it all in the event of an upset. Boats do tip over on occasion and you need to be as prepared for it as you can be by wearing a life jacket, clothing that dries quickly when wet and all of the required safety items. You can even buy drybags that double as a backpack! As far as your camping gear goes I've always felt that the ultralight gear is best suited for this type of trip but let's face it, if you're the type of person to go on a backwoods adventure for a few days away from everybody, then you likely won't mind spending a few extra bucks on the right gear to help you do it more easily.

So I guess the bottom line is this. All camping gear is not created equal. What you may use for camping with your kids and family may not be the best to use when back country camping. You don't have to spend the most money on an item to get quality but if you "nickel and dime" yourself on your gear it will likely come back to haunt you in that the gear simply will not last. Do your research, spend a bit but not more than you need to, and you'll find your gear will last you for years and years to come.

Six Good Backpacking Habits

When backpacking, habits matter. A better sleeping bag may keep you a bit warmer, and a cell phone or GPS unit definitely makes a trip safer, but the things you regularly do while on the trail are just as important. Here are six habits you should develop for wilderness travel.

1. Foot Care

Blisters and other foot problems are not always just painful inconveniences. If they happen far enough into a trip they can slow your hike out to the point where food runs short or you just can't continue. You may know how to treat a blister or trench foot, but good habits can prevent these from ever happening.

Make stopping several times daily to air out your feet a part of your routine. Take off your shoes and socks and set them in the sun. Pull out your insoles if you can. Soak your feet in a cold stream if they are very hot, but be sure the skin is entirely dry before putting the shoes back on. Change socks if necessary, and let the wet pair hang from the pack to dry. Cover "hot spots" with moleskin before they become blisters. This regular attention to your feet may seem time consuming, but it will allow you to travel more miles more safely.

2. Water Planning

Dehydration is always a possibility when hiking in the wilderness. It is dangerous in hot weather and it can even lead to hypothermia in cold (we need enough fluids for our bodies to heat themselves properly). Plan ahead so you never get the point of being thirsty and without water.

Carry two water bottles, and develop the following good backpacking habit. Anytime you cross a stream or are near a water source, if one water bottle is less than half full, finish it off and fill it. If you are using a water treatment chemical like iodine, while it does its job you will still have the other bottle full of water. If there is a long stretch coming without opportunities to collect water, drink up both water bottles if practical, and fill them both. Also be sure to start each trip fully hydrated. One more habit is to watch your urine. Unless you are taking vitamin pills it will usually only be bright yellow when you aren't drinking enough fluids.

3. Watch The Weather

It is a good habit to watch the weather reports before you go backpacking. You can get the forecast for anywhere in the world now online. But you also should be looking at that sky from time to time, and be aware of any changes. It is common to have lightning almost every afternoon in some mountain areas, for example. If the trail you are on is heading up high and you see the clouds forming, you might want to wait where you are until after the storms.

Learn to observe the skies in the direction where the weather is coming from, and also where it will affect you. If the streams you are crossing are fed by the mountains in the distance, and you see heavy rain clouds there, you might soon see a rise in water levels. Also, if you see the whole sky clearing out at sunset, you may be in for a cold night. Learn and observe.

4. Cell Phones

When backpacking, it's a good habit to fully charge your cell phone before you leave. Then turn it off. The primary reason to even bring it is to have a way to call for help. Preserve the batteries for just such an event. It's not fun to continually hear the phone ringing in the wilderness anyhow.

5. GPS

If you have a GPS unit, put fresh batteries in it before every trip. Then "mark" your car or the trailhead just before you hit the trail. A GPS can walk you right back to the vehicle if you remember to enter it as a landmark. Otherwise, it may not help much to just know your coordinates.

6. Leave An Itinerary

One of the backpacking habits most important to your safety, is to let someone you trust know where you will be and when you expect to return. That way if all else fails, help will be sent out there to look for you. Just be sure to notify that person as soon as you do return, so they don't think you are still out in the wilderness.

Camping Trips From Hell

I still remember my first camping trip - it's not the sort of experience that will easily be forgotten. I'd been convinced that it was a good idea - a cheap way to have a little break.

As we packed the tent and various accessories into the back of the car, I realised that I was completely out of my depth. It all looked significantly more complicated than I'd bargained for.

Surely we wouldn't need all this stuff? We were driving down to Devon - we hadn't booked ahead, as apparently there wouldn't be any need. The holiday would be cheap and we'd have great fun - we could just pick a camp site that was in a nice location and use it as a base.

The weather was pretty awful on the drive down. The thought of spending a week in a wet field wasn't looking too appealing at this point. As it was, the heavy traffic meant that we made slow progress.

By the time we turned up at the site it was too dark to see very much. As we unpacked our stuff from the boot of the car, I realised that we'd have been in a complete mess if it hadn't been for the torches that had thoughtfully been packed.

This was certainly the case when we came to erect the tent. It seemed to me that the tent was relatively small, but even with some experienced assistance, it wasn't much fun putting it together in the rain.

It wasn't the best start to the trip and things were to get worse when I realised that I needed to visit the toilet.

Having marched across a muddy field, finding my way by torchlight, I soon noticed that the toilets were of a pretty low standard.

In fact, I was grateful that the torch wasn't lighting up more of the so-called facilities.

I remember it raining throughout the week that we were there. Despite attempts to remain cheerful, it was a horrid trip.

I'm pleased to say that I've now been on a number of other camping trips and found them to actually be rather pleasant. The key to success seems to be to prepare properly.

Other than the tent, there's always one item that I make sure that I pack - a folding camping toilet.

There are plenty of activities for kids (and big kids) and with a wide selection of lions, leopards, tigers and jaguars, big cat lovers will be in heaven!

Parque Nacional Las Canadas del Teide

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Tenerife is the Volcanic Mount Teide. Not one if you’re nursing a hangover, but for everyone else this is an absolute must-see. The views from the mountain are simply breathtaking, and you get a fantastic look at the island which you will never forget. It’s wise to get there early as this is one of the big attractions of Tenerife – if you want to head all the way to the top you’ll need to wrap up warmly – and be sure to bring your camera!

Golf del Sur

If you’re a fan of golf, then a stay at the Golf del Sur resort should be a definite on your Tenerife package holiday itinerary. The resort offers very little to do other than play golf – but if you love the game this won’t be a problem. Of the courses available, my pick is Playa Del Americas, with Golf del Sur getting a special mention for its tranquil feel. Within easy reach you’ll also find Amirilla and Adeje – both of which offer an entertaining round of golf. If the sport’s your thing, feel free to ignore the other things to do in Tenerife and make this your sole focus!

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

Loro Parque

Yep, another wildlife park – Tenerife has many of these and putting only 2 in the top 5 was quite a struggle! Loro Parque is the pick though purely for its size, scale, variety and the sense that it’s worth visiting the country for! The park seems to put animal welfare as its number one priority, and the animals are simultaneously happy and entertaining as a result. There are a number of fantastic shows (the whales in particular are an absolute must-see) and you can expect to see turtles, sharks, flamingos, penguins, tigers – everything you could want. The park is home to the biggest parrot collection in the world (and the original purpose of the attraction!), so be sure to get plenty of photos of these amazing colourful birds.

There’s so many attractions in Tenerife that it’d be a shame to just stick to the beach and the clubs – although I wouldn’t blame you if you did, superb as they are. Just consider they above options when you touch down for your package holiday in Tenerife!

Fun Times on a Holiday to Luxor

Holidays to Luxor are not only fascinating they are fun and exciting. The Temple of Luxor is a beautiful place to visit to see the design and structure. The temple is located down the road from the Museum of Ancient Egyptian Art. The museum has so many exhibits on display to see. Luxor has two sides to visit. The east side and the west side are both places of interest. You will see ancient ruins and the tombs if you visit Thebes, the capital city. Luxor is much more than a tourist destination. On the east side, you will find a more modern Luxor. The museums, shops and restaurants are found mostly on the east side. If you need public transportation, the east side has trains and buses. If you are looking for things to do for tourists, you want to visit the west side of Luxor. The short ride from one side to another is easy to take so that everyone can stay in hotels on the east side and travel to the west side for sightseeing. More hotels are being built on the west side so that visitors can stay on the west side instead of taking the short cruise back and forth.

In Luxor, you can do some sightseeing by horse and carriage, bicycles or walking. If you enjoy walking, you can visit the Valley of the Queens by walking through the desert. Not only is the desert walk adventurous, it shows you the beauty of the area. The Ancient Thebes can be accessed by bicycle if you want to spend the day exploring the land by bike. The nightlife is non-existence in Luxor unless your hotel has a bar and lounge. The Muslim law forbids drinking of alcoholic beverages in public. You could find a few places that might sell alcoholic beverages for cash and carry, but you must keep it out of sight until you reach your hotel. Luxor is a beautiful place to visit, but you do have to follow their customs and beliefs. There are many places to eat on the west side and the east side.

The history and culture of Luxor is something that attracts so many visitors. Although, you have to follow the customs, you can enjoy your cheap holidays to Luxor. The eateries serve some of the same foods you would find at home. There is a McDonald's and a Jamboree, which have the foods most will be familiar with. On the west side, it is possible to find some area bars, but they are few and in between. The west side is more fun that the modern east side. You should see everything on the west side, but do not forget to explore the easy side as well.

Getting Ready To Go Camping

So you want to take your kids camping just like you did as a child with your parents of grandma or grandpa. Opps the camp ground they took you to is now condos on the lake .

Let assume you are new to camping but you have some experience as a child. You will need to become familiar with camping gear. If you have a friend that camps a lot you can go with them to learn the basics.

The first thing you will need is some type of shelter for you and the kids.

What Gear Do I Need?

Most first timers start out with a tent. The first tent should not be to expensive but it should provide good shelter in the wind and rain. With all the models out there spend some time looking them over do not get one that requires a masters degree in engineering to set up. Stay to the basic needs as you get more experience the tent can be given to the kids as you will upgrade to a fancy one.

Remember you are camping on a budget no use in spending thousands of dollars for all the gear only to find the wife , kids, or your self hates camping. The tent should shield you from bugs sun and the rain.

There are bugs our here in the wilderness so be ware. The tent should have a good screen to keep the little varmints out and yet be easy for the kids to open.

The tent will be some place to sleep and store your cloths. If the weather turns bad them the kids can play or read in the tent under supervision. It is nice to sleep under the stars but you will have to get a tent sooner or later.

The light rectangular sleeping bag will do If you and your spouse want to sleep in the same sleeping bag just zip them together and you will have one large sleeping bag. Do not forget your pillows but if you do roll up your towels they can make not a bad pillow.

Be sure to have at least two ground tarps at least the size of the floor of your tent. Place on down on the ground then set your tent on it. The second one may be used as a shelter above the picnic table.

Campground Cooking

All of use love the smell of food cooking outside whether it is at the camp ground or in the backyard. If you barbecue a lot at home you all ready have the basic now how to camp cook. Most public camp grounds and private camp ground will have a picnic table and a cooking pit at each camp site.

Take a portable grill with you and you will feel right at home. Pick up a gas stove and a set of pots and pans and you are ready to be a camp chef, remember a coffee pot as the nearest coffee shop may be 20 or so miles away.

Depending on you level of cooking skills you will now be able to prepare meats as if you were at home.

When shopping for gear go to the local big box store as they will carry every thing you need. Some will have tents set up if so climb in ask yourself is this roomy and will every one fit in comfortable. along with all the stuff you will take with you.

If the tents are not set up mark out a piece of the floor at home with tape this will be the same size as the floor of the tent call a family meeting and get every body to lay in the tape lines you laid down is it the right size? If not reassess your needs.
