4 Traveling Tips For the Health Challenged - Leaving Home Prepared

The small one worked fine because I could stuff it in a big purse.


• 2) Plan your prescription and over-the-counter medicine needs carefully and take what you think you'll need with you. Planning ahead will keep you from either doing without and suffering- or -having to find drug stores in unfamiliar locales. Those last minute, late night trips can be unpleasant and sometimes dangerous.


• 3) Consider taking a sleeping mask and ear plugs to use. You can buy them at most drug stores ahead of time and they are easy to pack. They will encourage your body to fall into a deeper and more restful sleep, which is not necessarily an easy task if you're not feeling well. Select the soft, spongy kind that is ranked efficient at keeping out high decibel noise. (Note: The best ones will mold to the shape of your ear without causing pain.)


• 4) Take only carrying cases (suitcases) with wheels and easy grip handles. Using those does not completely save the shoulders, but they help a lot. Recently after a 10-hour trip, I felt really tired. I looked for my car in vain throughout an immense parking lot. I walked and walked, dragging my wheeled cases behind me, ready to leave them in the street if necessary. If they had not been so maneuverable, I would have done it, too! (...possibly ruining a vacation and homecoming!)

Festivals and Unique Special Events Keep Branson Visitors Coming Back For More

Since this is Branson's 2nd year as a "host city," the amount of spectators promises to be as exciting as last year's.

Well, the Boeing Corp.'s web site says: "One seat is as safe as the other."

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokesman said, "It's an age old question. There's just no way to say."

And, airsafe.com claims "there is no safest seat."

But, Popular Mechanics magazine has found that all of those assurances by major industry players just aren't true. Could it be that the reason the establishment doesn't want to tell you where the safest seat on an airplane occupies is because it's the cheap seats?

That's right, if there are fatalities in an airplane crash, the people in first class at the front of the plane have less than a 50 percent survival rate. Those in the rear cabin (approximately back quarter) of the plane survive at 69 percent.

David Norland reported that the Popular Mechanics study showed that in 11 of the last 20 fatal crashes in the United States, "passengers near the tail of a plane are about 40 percent more likely to survive a crash than those in the first few rows up front." The study included all jet flights with fatalities in the U.S. since 1971.

They found that in 11 of the 20 crashes, back passengers fared better while in just 5 in 20 did the first class folks come out ahead.

So, when you're looking for the safest seat on an airplane, head toward the back. Your statistical odds of survival are much higher there.
