Bhutan Treks – The Brokpa People And Their Legends

Ethnically Unique

The Brokpas speak Sharchop, a different language to that spoken elsewhere in Bhutan - more noticeable to visitors on Bhutan treks, they dress uniquely. Brokpa people are easily recognised by their woven red jackets, often detailed with stitched animals, and curious black yak hats. These hats have five spidery legs, designed to channel rainwater away from the wearer's head and body. As befitting the name Brokpa, which can be translated to mean 'nomad' or 'herder', the people remain semi-nomadic yak herders, relying on the animal for clothing, food and transport. Aum Jono and the King's Demand

Like many Himalayan peoples, the Brokpa have a story of their origin. They moved to Bhutan many hundreds of years ago - according to them, this is because they once lived in Tibet, until a conflict with a ruler. This king demanded that his people remove the top of a mountain because it blocked the sun, covering his palace in shadow. One woman, Aum Jono, who did not think this ridiculous order should be obeyed, told her people that it was far easier to remove a head than a mountain-top. The Brokpas agreed. After killing the king, Aum Jono led them to safety and prosperity in eastern Bhutan. She is now revered as a protecting deity, with a festival held in her honour.

Brokpas and the Yeti

Anyone planning to go on Bhutan treks will surely have heard of the Yeti. To the Brokpas this creature is called Megay, and yak herders to this day report encountering Megay in high, thickly forested altitudes, typically when they have pursued a straying yak. According to their remarkable tales, the Megay consumes bamboo shrubs, is white or light red in colour, and smells of garlic. The Megay is not a curiosity, as it is to Westerners, but a guardian deity of remote mountainous regions - and the Brokpas accordingly treat it with respect.

A Day Trip to Jinja (Uganda)

Driving up to the Mabira Forest Tourist Center I was geared up and so excited by the fact that in a few minutes I would be going on a forest walk in the Mabira Forest, the largest rain forest in Uganda. I had all sorts of expectations, many unrealistic, but we'll get to that later. Mabira forest is located in Eastern Uganda and can be accessed via the Kampala-Jinja highway.

It is a tropical rainforest that spans about 300 square kilometers. Rainforests are characterized by high rainfall and are home to over 50% of the world's indigenous species. The thick forests also mean that very little sunlight gets through to the ground restricting the plants that can survive there and making it easy for people to walk around.

We arrived at the forest center donned in jeans and sneakers (tennis shoes) ready to meet with the forest and all its creatures. After paying the fee at the office, securing a guide, and choosing a trail, we were advised to rent gumboots as it had rained only the night before and the guide didn't think our shoes were appropriate (The boots came in only one size so take note and come with your own for comfort). I expected to see all sorts of birds, snakes and learn about the many medicinal plants that were indigenous to Mabira forest. I didn't see any of these things, and if I saw any medicinal plants which I am sure I did, I didn't know the difference. In all honesty our guide had probably just started at this job and he didn't know much except for the trails and one or two trees.

The forest was dark, with sporadic streams of sunlight coming through here and there. It was eerily quiet though, but this was attributed to the time of day of our visit. The plentiful birdlife was not so active at that time of the afternoon. We were disappointed that we didn't see any bird life and our guides inexperience meant that since we didn't have much knowledge about birds, we couldn't identify the few birds we heard. The walk was interesting once we got over our initial unrealistic expectations. The majesty of the forest cannot however be understated. We got to see the strangling fig tree which feeds on its host eventually obliterating it and taking over completely. Emerging into the open air and sunlight meant our forest walk was over, we returned the boots and continued on our way to Jinja.

We arrived in the sleepy Jinja town ready for lunch. A quick drive up and down main street and we decided to head to one of the hotels in the area to eat. The food was great and despite having a vegetarian, a celiac and some ardent meat eaters in the group, everyone was able to get a good meal. Our table had great views of the Nile and was altogether very relaxing. After our reverie, we headed for the source of the Nile where we went on a boat tour of the area known as the source of the Nile. The guide took us to the place where the John Hannington Speke identified the Nile as flowing from Lake Victoria and thus naming the lake as its source. We also saw a small island which is home to literally thousands of birds and whose sight would be a bird watchers dream. The sunset boat ride was the perfect end to the day, we docked just before it got dark and started our drive back to Kampala.

If payment is needed pay promptly with proper and valid documents and financial instruments nothing can be less helpful and impressive than a check, money order or draft drawn up wrong or improperly. Lastly any appointments that are made must be kept and attended to, prudently and on time. If something comes up and you will not be able to attend or be late always phone ahead, explain, rebook the appointment and explain properly the issue. Of course this should only occur on a one time basis and not be repeated.

All in all prepare. Fill out the forms properly, well ahead of time. Pay and fees, attend any necessary meetings. Be on time. Lastly always be truthful.

If you are lucky enough, you may be able to catch one of the Full Moon or Dark Moon ceremonies which attract devotees from far a field and are some of the most colourful events on the island. Please remember that a sensible dress code, and polite/respectful behaviour are essential for continued hospitality towards foreign guests. Other than departing around a child's sleep schedule, there are a few items that children can bring with on a trip that will help ease the discomfort and restlessness a small child may experience during a long road trip. When possible, have the child pack their own backpack with things they are accustomed to playing with and depending on the age, your assistance may be required. This will involve the child in the planning and assist them in understanding why some of the changes are happening to their normal routine.

Following is a few ideas of items that can be easily packed and bring hours of satisfaction to a family trip.
• Age appropriate reading material such as picture books for small children and reading books for older children.

Backpacking Australia? Should You Bring a Laptop?

If you're backpacking Australia or visiting Oz on the working holiday visa, you may be wondering if you should bring your laptop.

After carefully considering the pros and cons, I decided to bring mine with me and it was the best decision I ever made. For me, my computer offered freedom, and I don't know what I would have done without it. But everyone is different, so I'll give you a few things to consider before bringing it with you:

1. Most hostels provide computers with Internet access, but they are often expensive and/or slow. If you plan on doing a lot of e-mailing and chatting, keeping up with friends on Facebook, uploading photos and updating your blog, this can get costly. Outside of libraries (and many of those require that you have a card), you will have a difficult time finding computers with free Internet access.

2. In most major cities you can find cafes or wi-fi hotspots that offer free or cheap Internet access--but only if you have a laptop with you. But be warned, it's not as easy to find free wi-fi in Australia as it is in the states and many places in Europe. You may have to ask around or do some research online. For example, in Melbourne, you can find free wireless internet in Federation Square. The library and McDonald's is another reliable place to find free wi-fi in many cities. The hostels don't want to advertise this when they can charge you for internet access, so don't expect much help from the staff. In fact, contrary to logical reasoning, some hostels charge more for wireless internet.

3. Even if you have to pay for wi-fi, if you have a laptop with you, you can cut your costs by working offline. For example, you can write all of your e-mails before you go online, then when you log on, cut and paste, and voila! This saved me a lot of money. Do the same with photos by editing them, writing captions and downsizing them before going online to upload them. If you depend on a hostel computer, you can eat up a lot of time and money just sitting there thinking of the right thing to write.

4. A laptop comes in handy for storing documents (e.g. resumes, CVs), photos and reference materials.

5. A laptop can serve as your personal entertainment center. In my opinion, this is the best part about having one with you while backpacking Australia. When you're always living with roommates, sometimes you need to have private time, but that's difficult in a hostel. If you have a computer, you can simply tune out by putting in your headphones and popping in a DVD. It was such a luxury to be able to do this. Many hostels will let you borrow DVDs from their collection. You'll also find it easy to borrow or trade movies with fellow backpackers at the hostel or rent them for free at the library. It also comes in handy when you need to charge your iPod, add songs or change playlists.

And my only arguments against bringing a laptop to Australia:

6. Laptops are a high-theft item. Before you book at a hostel, ask if they have lockers in the room. If they don't have lockers, ask them if they have a safe where you can store valuables. If you are going on a trip where you will not be bringing your computer with you, you need to find a safe place to store it. For example, when I went to New Zealand, I kept mine with friends who were renting a house in Melbourne.

7. Laptops are easy to damage. As you're traveling around, it's easy to drop a bag or have a drunk roommate spill beer on your valuable computer.

I never regretted my decision to bring my laptop with me to Australia, but it is a personal decision. If you are going to constantly worry about having your computer stolen or damaging it, you may be better off leaving it at home. But there are tremendous perks to bringing one with you while backpacking Australia--you can save money on Internet costs, work on documents/e-mails at your leisure and watch movies whenever you feel like it.

Himeji Castle

This is the number one castle in Japan and a must see even if you are not a castle enthusiast. It sits perched upon a hill and because of its dramatic look and white color it is often referred to as the White Heron Castle. It has a very long history and the first fort was built on the site in 1333. The structure, as it currently stands was completed in 1618.

There are a number of unique things about this castle including a complex series of gates and mazes which made it very difficult for attackers to gain entrance to the main fortress. There are also several ghost stories that have grown up around it; the most famous of which is the story of the serving girl named Okiku who was betrayed, tortured, and thrown into the castles well.

Himeji is open to the public and people are given the freedom to roam the grounds both inside and out as they wish. There are also a limited number of English speaking tour guides available. This is a wonderful experience of Japan and about an hour by train from Kyoto.

Matsumoto Castle

This castle is located a short distance from Tokyo so it is a good place to visit if you are not going to be spending a lot of time in the country or if you have budgeted your time very tightly. The keep of this castle was completed in 1504 so it has a very long history. It also is quite dramatic in appearance because it is a flatland castle that is perched right alongside the water, and even juts out into the water. Matsumoto is a great example of stealth in castle building because it is one of the castles that looks like it has five floors but really has a sixth floor that is a secret.

Kumamoto Castle

This is a castle that has a remarkable history. It was originally built in 1607 and in 1877 it was the site for the last remnants of the Samurai revolt and civil war in Japan. Much of the structure was destroyed by fire during the revolt. It spent almost a hundred years in ruins but has recently been rebuilt to its original beauty and opened to the public. The interior of the castle towers is now a museum and it is filled with many of the splendors of architecture and design of the period it was built in. Kumamoto was also used by the famous director Akira Kurosawa in his 1985 film “Ran”.

The whole of Japan is peppered with many castles and you don’t have to stay on the mainland to see them. If you take a trip to the island of Okinawa you can visit some fine examples that are a bit different than those on the mainland.

Shuri Castle

This is a fine example of the development of a structure over centuries. Shuri was the capital of the island of Okinawa and the castle was the seat of government. So it retains not only its massive fortifications but it also has a certain opulence and beauty that one would expect of the home of a ruler of a kingdom. It was almost completely destroyed during World War 2 but since has been totally reconstructed and sites in the middle of a complex site called Shuri Castle Park. If you are traveling to the island of Okinawa this is the one castle you should visit.

Don’t overlook the many Ruins

One of the most interesting things about the castles of Japan is the plethora of ruins that are still in reasonably good shape.

Nakagusuku Ruins

This is a world heritage site on the island of Okinawa that is well preserved. It is approximately 400 years old and while it is in ruins much of the stone structures are still intact and the layout of the castle is clearly seen, particularly in the concentric walls that defended the hold. It sits on the top of a hill and it has a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. This ruin is well worth a visit. And nearby is an authentic Japanese home that is now kept as a museum. It is called the Nakamura house. If you visit Nakagusuku it is well worth it to also visit the Nakamura house which is only five minutes away. It was the home of several generations and is a good example of how the Japanese lived centuries ago.

There are literally hundreds of castles in Japan built over the course of several centuries and in various states of repair. You can visit any part of the country and find a castle or a ruin not too far away. These structures are a remarkable testament to the history of the country. And while they look quite different than their European counterparts they still did the same job in the same ways.

Being 'slipped a Mickey' can happen to anyone - but solo females tend to be targeted more often. A typical scenario might be a young woman who walks into a bar alone and a stranger offers to buy her a drink. She accepts, excuses herself to use the bathroom, and then returns to finish the drink. Later she wakes up in a dark alley, disorientated and dishevelled, with her bag and money missing - and a sickening feeling that she has been physically violated.
Travelling is fun and enlightening, so it is a shame that we have to worry about the dark side of life and the possibility of being preyed upon on holiday. However, a savvy traveller who is aware and alert to potential dangers is already halfway to keeping criminals at bay. Unfortunately, drink spiking and drug-assisted robberies are increasing problems in many parts of the world, especially in some cities and popular tourist spots. The motive for the assault may be robbery, rape, sexual assault - or a combination. It can happen to women or men of any age.

If assaulted while travelling abroad victims may feel too scared to tell anyone but it is important to advise the embassy, local police, or obtain legal advice. Once help is sought, counsellors can offer advice about sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy and abortion. The assault must be reported quickly so that forensic evidence is not lost and urine and blood samples can be taken. Ketamin - Is a fast-acting drug which comes as a clear liquid or a white powder - similar to cocaine.

So you're like John Locke of the TV series Lost and simply (literally) dying for an adventure. Or maybe you're just bored to death and you want to experience more of life. If you so choose, you can simply watch the dog sled races or try it out yourself by mushing your own team. The Siberian huskies, are highly trained so there's no need to worry about your safety. Plus, if you have the time, you can also visit the renowned author, husky owner and Alaskan original Mary Shields.

Fjord Exploration
If you've ever dreamed of experiencing the sheer scale of an honest-to-goodness glacier that the pages of a book or movie screen just can't convey then Alaska is the place to be? Unless, of course you prefer Greenland or Iceland for your icy adventure. I think not... and just another of many reasons why we should be thankful for the great State of Alaska.

Following funerals and liquor stores, weddings are one of the markets that will generate substantial new sales in 2009.
